Introduction into Implementation of Optimization problems with PDEs (Lecture and Exercise during the lecture-free period)

The practical course is aimed at students interested in the practical aspects of Optimization with PDE constraints. It is based on the lecture Moderne Methoden der Nichtlinearen Optimierung: Finite-Elemente-Methoden für PDE-beschränkte Optimalsteuerungsprobleme (MA4503/MA4505) and is therefore highly recommended as a conclusion of the session. With the help of a Finite Element solver in MATLAB, we will discretize the problems adressed in the lecture and solve them with appropriate optimization algorithms. Focus will be made on
  • Discretization of elliptic optimal control problems
  • Formulation of discrete optimality conditions (computation of the Lagrangian in the discrete and continuous cases)
  • Computation of linear quadratic problems
  • Computation of non linear problems with first and second order methods

The practical course will take place from 22.–25. August (during the lecture free period) in room MI 03.04.011. Three double sessions will be held each day between 10:00 and 17:00. Organization will be as follows:
  • 10:00–10:45: Plenary session tutorial.
  • 11:00–12:30: Autonomous group work.
  • 14:00–14:45: Plenary session tutorial.
  • 15:00–16:30: Autonomous group work.
The starting time at 10:00 and 14:00 is fixed, the progress of the day can be adapted if necessary.
